Clara Peeters (1588-1621) was a trained Flemish painter, and one of the earliest to paint still lifes. One of the few female artists working in the 17th century, Peeters’ work found its way to collectors and the Spanish court. Her subjects included abundant table scenes of fruits and vegetables, flowers, gilt tableware, fish and game. Still life paintings of this time often referenced the emerging discipline of scientific illustration.
