A respected and classically-trained painter in her native Sweden, Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created groundbreaking abstract paintings with spiritual themes. At the end of her life, she insisted that her thousands of paintings and drawings not be exhibited for 20 years after her death. Under recognized and having fallen into obscurity, her work has recently been rediscovered. The Guggenheim’s show, Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future (2018-19), was the first major solo exhibition of af Klint’s work in the United States, and broke attendance records for the museum.
