Louise Dahl-Wolfe

This week I looked at the work of photographer Louise Dahl-Wolfe. As I use art history as a starting point for learning to draw, I’m trying to detach a bit from the source artwork so I can explore different styles. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t- but it’s good practice!

Best known as a portraitist and longtime fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar, Louise Dahl-Wolfe helped redefine the look of fashion. She was among the earliest photographers to shoot models in natural light, showing them as relaxed, modern and liberated women. I love her outdoor photographs taken in locations like Tunisia and Spain that have a narrative quality, and almost resemble film stills.
