Tina Modotti

So I’ve decided to turn this Drawing Art History effort into a project! My goal is to create 100 drawings based on work from groups underrepresented in art museums.

My current aspirations:

🎨 Improve my drawing and observational skills (tryin’ over here!)

👀 Spend more time looking (like, REALLY looking) at art, and learning about it

👏 Bring attention to artists in groups historically underrepresented in museums

💖 Uncover new ways for people to CONNECT WITH THE ART THEY LOVE

I’m excited! Thanks for joining me on this. Let’s learn more about art!

This drawing is based on a photograph by Italian-born artist and activist Tina Modotti (1896-1942). I really liked the photo’s composition and shadows. It was taken during her years in Mexico where she was part of a community of artists and intellectuals including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jean Charlot and José Clemente Orozco. Modotti’s subjects included portraits, architecture, the Mexican muralist movement, the dignity of workers, as well as more abstract compositions.
