Berenice Abbott

I’ve been thinking about ways to evolve my illustration style, and was browsing photographs by Berenice Abbott (1898-1991). This is a sketch based on a photo from her monumental “Changing New York” series.

Abbott had a long and successful photography career in portraits, architecture and science. But I especially like her 1930s New York City street scenes, which were featured in the 1937 “Changing New York” exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Photos from that series are now a historical record of city life and its transformation from low-slung neighborhoods to skyscrapers. I love the overall texture of her work, and the shadows she captured in her unadulterated pictures.
