Elizabeth Clarkson

I like the idea of creating digital surface patterns, so I thought a portion of this incredible 19th century quilt could serve as inspiration.

Pieced patchwork quilts, painstakingly made from whipstitched fabric sections, could function either as bedding, or to mark a special occasion such as a birth or anniversary. Elizabeth Clarkson (1771-1852) likely made this quilt as a wedding gift for her son, and it became a treasured family heirloom. She was a forerunner in using this patchwork technique with printed cotton fabric in such an elevated way.
